Amazing Apple Picking Experiences at This Local Orchard
Living out in rural Indiana, there are certain times of the year that are my favorites and one of them is harvest time. There isn’t anything better than getting your produce right from the farm. It just tastes better! Luckily, here in Huntington County, we are lucky to have Phil’s U Pick Orchard located on 760 N 500 W, Huntington where they are loaded up with apples, vegetables, pumpkins and mums that are all ripe for the picking.
This past week I headed out to the orchard that’s located right outside of town. It only took a few minutes from downtown Huntington to arrive at Phil’s. Make sure you follow the signs which direct you to the parking area. The orchard can get busy on the weekends and they’ve made the drive one way to help with traffic flow. As you head down the long lane, you will see trees loaded up with apples which only adds to the excitement for the experience.
Once you get parked you can check in at the tent and they’ll get pointed in the right direction so that you can get picking. What was hard for me was deciding which type of apples to get. So many choices at Phil’s. Pass between the rows and you’ll see all your favorites: Gala, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Jonalicous etc. There are over 30 varieties of apples so it’s fun to try out some new types that you can test out in your recipes. On this trip, I was turned on to the Pixie Crunch variety, which I grabbed a few to take home along with my favorite Honey Crisp and they are fabulous.
The orchard is truly a beautiful place and it’s quite satisfying to fill your basket with your harvest. Don’t forget while you are there to stock up on veggies too. They have squash, eggplant, zucchini and other veggies that you can pick fresh from the vines or purchase the ones ready to go inside the tent.
Phil’s U Pick is a great overall family outing. Once you get your apples picked, you can also take care of selecting your favorite pumpkins and mums to decorate your home for the season. My kids loved the experience of picking fruit off the tree and it’s a ton of fun to search for their most favorite pumpkin from the patch.
Before I headed out, I grabbed a gallon of apple cider which was some of the best I’ve had in ages. I have to say that I haven’t had an orchard experience in years and it was well worth the time and the short drive for a genuine fall harvest experience. Now I just have to decide what to do with all my apples!
