Sunken Gardens – seek out this sunken treasure in Huntington!

Whether you are interested in historic landmarks or just enjoy beautiful unique spaces, Sunken Gardens is a must-see location in Huntington, Indiana.

The Sunken Gardens started out as a stone quarry, but after it was abandoned and became an eyesore, the city purchased the property in 1924. A short time later a group of members of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, headed by E.M. Wasmuth, acquired the quarry and began to beautify it into its original beauty. The group dedicated it to the city in 1929. According to the Parks Department, it is one of only two such gardens in the country.

The Sunken Gardens are located at Memorial Park just off West Park Drive, just a short drive from Downtown Huntington. There’s a small parking lot just west of the gardens and you follow the brick pathway to the rock staircase. Once in the gardens, you will be in awe of the beautiful stone walls, the stone bridges and fountains.

Plan to spend some time relaxing and walking around the gardens. It’s also a nice stop for a family picnic. This location is also the site of many weddings, providing a breathtaking backdrop for that special occasion.

If you have time, Memorial Park also features a great playground for the kids, frisbee golf goals, basketball area, tennis courts , picnic pavilion, scenic walking trails that encircle a large pond (formerly fish hatcheries) and additional gardens.
