We’re celebrating corn at Salamonie Lake, Aug. 25 – 26 with corn-themed, family-friendly activities, including a 5k Run and 1-mile Family Fun Run/Walk. Be sure to stop out and grab an ear hot off the grill or pack up a few dozen for your next cookout.
The public is invited to create a scarecrow and enter it into the scarecrow contest. Scarecrows must be family friendly and able to stand on their own. Scarecrows should be delivered to the Salamonie Interpretive Center (IC) Aug. 20 - 25 between 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Voting takes place at the IC beginning Aug. 25, at the Salamonie interpretive center: $1 equals one vote, every $5 equals seven votes. Grand prize to the scarecrow with the most votes. A 5k A-Maize(ing) Run begins at the Wildlife Management Pond. This run will include unpaved trails, including hills and some steps. Entrance to the 5k is $15 (cash or check) per person. Prizes for top three male and female finishers. Advance registration is requested by calling 260-468-2127 or stopping in at the interpretive center. Last minute registration on property available the evening of Aug. 25 during corn sales at the entrance gate.
The 1-mile Family Fun Run is free and open to runners and walkers of all ages. Children under 10 years of age need accompanied by adult. Dogs on 6-foot or less leashes are welcome during the Fun Run. Stollers are also welcome but be advised the race is partially on unpaved trails with hills. .
Weekend events and times as follows:
Aug. 25 – evening hours sweet corn sales and last minute 5k registration at Lost Bridge West property entrance gate (from 5 – 7 p.m.). All sweet corn sales and scarecrow votes benefit Friends of the Upper Wabash Services.
Aug. 26: 8:30 a.m. – 5k walk/run. Start at Wildlife Management Pond. $15 per person.
9 a.m. – One (1) mile family fun run. Start at Wildlife Management Pond.
9 – 11 a.m. – Kids corn carnival. Sack races, archery, sweet corn sales, and more, Wildlife Management Pond.
5 p.m. – Corn hole registration at Wildlife Management Pond. $5 per person.
5:30 p.m. – Corn hole tournament at Wildlife Management Pond.
5:30 p.m. – Corn husk doll workshop at Wildlife Management Pond shelter.
7 p.m. – Scarecrow and corn hole awards
