Salamonie Lake’s Senior Monday Luncheon, Nov. 3
The Senior Monday Luncheon will be held at noon, November 3 at the Salamonie Lake Interpretive Center, located in Lost Bridge West SRA. Anyone age 50 or older is welcome to attend.
Guest speaker Alan Daugherty is a retired Huntington County teacher who has served as a Bluffton News-Banner weekly nature columnist for two decades. In retirement his interest turned to researching and writing books concerning local history and people who “fell between the cracks.” He wrote a biography of Edward Bruce Williamson.
Williamson’s life and world accomplishments will be the focus of Daugherty’s presentation. Williamson, a bank president, became recognized on six continents in discoveries regarding dragonflies as well as becoming a world leader in hybridized irises. Although Indiana’s first State Forester Charles C. Deam may be a more recognized name, Deam himself acknowledged he owed all his achievements to his “buddy” Williamson. Williamson discovered the Deam Oak, not Deam. At one time, beds of Williamson flowers bloomed in every Indiana State Park as a result of Williamson’s gift to the state.
The program begins with a carry-in meal at noon. Guests should bring a side dish to share, a beverage, and their table service. The main dish of chili dogs will be provided by Friends of Upper Wabash Interpretive Services. A donation will be accepted to help defray costs.
Seating is limited. Reservations may be made by calling 260-468-2127.
Upper Wabash Interpretive Services is located at 3691 New Holland Road, Andrews, 46702.
